LP Gas conversion - helping the environment

LP Gas (Liquid Petroleum Gas) is a clean burning fuel which is a great alternative to petrol. It is more environmentally friendly than diesel and petrol on several levels, from its processing through to its residue when burnt. In most cases LP Gas can make major and immediate contributions to delivering real greenhouse gasses emissions reductions. If you drive an LPG Auto gas vehicle it’s good to know that, in addition to saving large amounts of money, you can also contribute to saving the environment

What is LPG?

LPG occurs naturally in crude oil and natural gas production fields and is also produced in the oil refining process.LPG is a mixture of light hydrocarbons which are gaseous at normal temperatures and pressures, and which liquefy readily at moderate pressures or reduced temperature. Because it is odourless, for safety reasons, a pungent compound, ethyl mercaptan is added to make any leaks easily detectable. The main component gases of LPG are:

Propane (C3H8)

Butane (C4H10)

As early as the mid 19th century LPG was first used as a portable fuel source. The first LPG cylinders were imported into Australia in the late 1930s. In the early ’50s the Australian LPG market was based on the limited supplies available from refineries. Changes occurred in 1969-70 when Esso and BHP began oil and gas production from Bass Strait, providing ample supplies. Approximately 60 per cent caof LPG produced in Australia is retained onshore, and about 40 per cent is exported. Today LPG accounts for about 10 per cent of Australia’s total fuel energy needs, including petrol and diesel, with annual retail sales amounting to more than $1 billion.

Given that most urban-use vehicles are often used for very short journeys this means a significant reduction in “real world” emissions.

The dirty black smoke that we see coming from diesel vehicles is particulates – a known cause of sickness and deaths. By replacing a diesel engine with an LPG Auto gas-powered equivalent, over 90 percent of this particulate matter would be eliminated.

When refuelling with petrol or diesel, chemical vapours escape into the atmosphere and can also be breathed in during the entire refuelling process. Auto gas refuelling is a fully sealed process.
